Cumberland Museum of Natural History, Portsmouth

Hampshire Swifts had our 9-board Exhibition on display in the Portsmouth Natural History Museum for about five months until the start of November this year, courtesy of Christine Taylor, Curator of Natural History at Portsmouth Museums.

The Cumberland House Natural History Museum is a wonderful place for children and adults to explore the natural and scientific world at close quarters. Having our Exhibition set up in one of their rooms this summer has been a great way to publicise the work of Hampshire Swifts and to spread the word about the problems Swifts are facing in the modern world – highlighting how easy they are to help not only at a local scale, but also nationally, if only politicians would listen and take the required action which would involve no cost to the public purse.

There are many stuffed birds and animals at the Museum dating back to when that was the done thing and also a lovely butterfly house where people can see wonderful butterflies flying about them and, if you are very lucky, observe the emergence of a butterfly from its pupa.

During the summer we also installed two double boxes and a call player at the rear of the Museum, overlooking the gardens. There is still a reasonable population of swifts in Southsea so hopefully it will not take too long for them to be occupied.

Thank you to Christine Taylor for all the arrangements and to everyone else involved.
